Designer Jewellery from the edge of Europe
Ireland's Wild Atlantic Coast at the Heart of contemporary Jewellery design
Martina Hamilton Jewellery Collections are handmade in Sligo, a stunningly beautiful place on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast. And it is the wildness of the Atlantic ocean, the wet crystal light and sea-glass waves, the tide burnished beaches, the shells and the coastal flowers which are the inspiration for our jewellery designs. A newly-discovered ancestral link for designer Martina with Dernish, a tiny Island off Sligo's west coast which has been uninhabited since the 1950s, has strengthened that inspiration. All jewelry pieces in our collections are handmade in our studio workshop in Sligo, by our family team of master goldsmiths.
August 2017 Featured Collection
It was this time last year we made a series of visits to Dernish Island, just off the coast of north Sligo with journalist Susan O'Keeffe and cinematographer Peter Martin. We were making a short film about my unfolding discovery of ancestral connections to the island, and how it had begun to influence several new collections I was making. I've been back to the island on several occasions since the film was completed, as recently as last Monday, (July 31st). The last day of summer was quite glorious weather-wise. We were able to follow a receding tide about 3 miles on foot across Streedagh to Conors Island and finally onto Dernish itself. We'd an afternoon snorkelling in the shallow rock pools at the back of the island reef. Ginger tea and mackerel sandwiches and two very happy dogs for company. Life could not have been any better.
