‘The "Made With Love" project from PBS and Symbio Studios journeys throughout the world, gaining exclusive access to the most remarkable artisans, highlighting the talent and dedication that only they can pass on to the next generation of apprentices. In our latest film we explore the wonders of historic Ireland and learn from the most talented artisans that carry their traditions into their love for the craft. From oyster farming and fine jewellery making in Sligo to the fast paced game of hurling in Kilkenny; from the making of a harp in Galway to the creation of beeswax candles in Tipperary; Ireland Made with Love dives into the heart and soul of the country like never before.  These artisans bring forth a passion that has led to modern masterworks. Pieces that are both personal expressions and portals to the past. This is Ireland Made With Love.’

Together with all my team I am absolutely delighted to appear in this stunning, soon to be released new film on Ireland and its food and craft artisans.

It is particularly wonderful to be featured alongside Aisling and Glenn from Sligo Oyster Experience, and I do hope that together we’ve represented the region well in this unique project.

We all know Christmas is a time for giving, but how much thought do you actually put into the gifts you buy? It’s so easy to leave shopping to the last minute and end up choosing something that either cost the earth (literally and metaphorically) or are meaningless, defeating the object of giving altogether.

If there is one thing that goes into Martina Hamilton’s jewellery, it’s thought. Every collection has been inspired by either a place, a moment, a poem, or a memory. Martina believes that every piece of jewellery bought from her shop or website, should have meaning, meaning to the person giving it and meaning to the person receiving it. The new additions to the Nebula collection are based on circles. Silver or gold circles entwined with a delicate vine to represent the love and friendships that wrap themselves around us, bringing meaning to our lives.

Reflections pendant and earrings in 9-carat gold

Reflections is a new collection inspired by a shimmer of sunlight reflected in a dark rockpool. The collection beautifully encapsulates the fleeting moments of reflection to the eye, that are so calming to the heart and mind. The wonderfully tactile surface achieved through careful hammering of the silver or gold, gives the piece a weathered look as if it’s been pummelled by the sea. Reflections is the perfect gift for anyone that needs reminding to stop occasionally and reflect on the constant yet ever-changing beauty of light on water.

The Croi Sliogan collection, was inspired by a shell found on a beach in Sligo (Sligo meaning Shelly Place). The heart shape revealed within the shell, compelled Martina to capture it in silver and gold. To give a Croi Sliogan pendant or earrings to someone, is also giving a piece of your heart.

Bean Ri, or She King, is a classic design that skilfully combines features of an ancient spear with a flame, representing strength and femininity, an elegant gift for ambitious, courageous or adventurous women.

And finally, our Heaven collection inspired by the well-known poem by WB Yeats often abbreviated “The cloths of Heaven. In the poem Yeats places romantic dreams and ambitions over material riches. However, sometimes, dreams and ambitions are not quite enough! So, a little piece from our Heaven collection in silver or gold acts as a simple message of adoration, acceptance, loyalty or simply just because it’s Christmas and a time to make someone feel special.

On Saturday 26 November we are hosting ‘Purple Saturday’ in store at The Cat & the Moon, 4 Castle Street, Sligo, between 12-4pm. There will be give-aways, and spot prizes to be won. Guest Leonie Cornelius will interview Sligo author Florence Gillan with reading from her debut novel Let them Lie, plus sweet treats and light refreshments.

A shimmer of sunlight in dark rock pools and tidal eddies seen on a beach close to Martina’s home in Sligo, was the inspiration behind the Reflections collection. Encapsulating fleeting moments of reflection by our eye, calming to the heart and mind. It was always our intention to extend the collection to include a ‘statement’ pendant, as the fluidity and organic nature of the design was crying out to be a bold, contemporary piece of jewellery.

From Atlantic ocean mist to a twig of a Hazel tree, the Nebula collection was inspired by the natural forces of the universe and beautifully encapsulates the circle of life entwined by the love and friendships we gather along the way.

Emotional and imaginative energy goes into every design created by Martina Hamilton, and the new Nebula collection is no exception. In fact, perhaps Nebula has the most powerful energy attached to it of all, a striking contrast to its intricate, delicate design.

Martina and her family team of jewellers are celebrating 30 years making jewellery!

“Within our retail outlet and workshop premises on Castle Street there have been some very busy days behind the scenes this year, it is our Pearl anniversary and we’re going to mark it in style. We are delighted to officially open our completely new Design Studio, right in-store!” 

Martina and her team cut the ribbon of a totally new Jewellery Design Studio last week. This hidden gem, situated right inside the shop is the new showcase home for the Martina Hamilton Jewellery collection, and most particularly for a thriving bespoke jewellery design service that is as popular and enduring as the shop itself.

“It’s a studio that might never have been” maintains Martina “During a small renovation on an old storage area last year local builder Christopher Hamilton discovered a bricked-up archway from the storage area into the shop. This discovery immediately changed our priorities for the renovation, and we knew the possibilities that arose would be an important step forward for us this year.”

Since founding her jewellery design business over 30 years ago, Martina and her team of goldsmiths have specialised in working with individual customers, creating unique one-off pieces of jewellery for special milestones and celebrations in people’s lives.

“The design process for creating these bespoke pieces is a meaningful and special process in and of itself” she says. Martina and her team are extremely proud of the bespoke aspect of their work and the new design studio is testament to this. “Bespoke jewellery made and designed here is invariably created to mark or celebrate a very special moment in people’s lives. It is always a great honour to play a significant part in these occasions, where people engage with us, creating an ideal wedding or engagement ring for example, or indeed the many other occasional pieces people ask us to create to celebrate truly significant moments and milestones in their lives. Our new design studio will greatly enhance and support that experience for our customers. In the privacy of the new studio we will be able to develop design ideas, discuss the metal and stones and other vital elements of the pieces we are creating. We have always been passionate about customer service, and so it is with great pride that we are able now to invite people in to view and experience our new instore design studio.”
